Burundi: Air borders now re-opened.
Since yesterday it is again possible to take a flight to or from Melchior Ndadaye International Airport of Bujumbura, the capital of Burundi. This decision to end the airport’s closure last March follows on from the successful results of the three-month mass screening campaign on all people with symptoms of COVID-19.
The announcement made last tuesday by Prosper Ntahorwamiye, Secretary General and spokesperson for the Government of Burundi, listed the measures that accompany this decision to fight the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
This press release states, among other things:
-Travellers entering or leaving Burundian territory must have a negative COVID-19 test completed within 72 hours prior to boarding.
-On arrival at Melchior Ndadaye International Airport, all travellers will be required to undergo a 72-hour “strict application” of screening and confinement in one of the hotels.
-The screening test and hotel charges will be borne by the traveller.
In addition, if a positive case of COVID-19 is detected on an aircraft, all passengers will have to undergo a second test. Positive cases will be dealt with in an appropriate centre, and will have to fund medical expenses themselves, if they are foreigners.
